Credits: Originally, this document was compiled in January 2003 from the notes and experiences of some of the Windows XP Beta Testers. There is a broad variety of CD and DVD burning and ISO extraction utilities available, and this group of people had the most experience using these tools with Windows XP downloaded ISO images.

2008==> A lot has changed since 2003, DVD-burning, Windows Vista came etc.

Tips & suggestions

  • If you do not have a successful CD/DVD burn, you may end up with errors during installation and an unusable computer. Frequently, a bad CD/DVD burn will result in “Error installing Side by Side Assemblies” during first boot.
  • If you are burning a CD/DVD, in general if you run into failed burns, you best close all other programs while the CD is burning, and let the program run without interruption.
  • If you have the option, use the fastest system you have available (processor, disks, etc.)
  • In your Display and your Power Management Control Panel, ensure that Screen Savers and Disk Spin Down will not occur during CD/DVD burning (typically 15 minutes for 4X speed, and 30 minutes for 2X speed).  You may also need to increase these settings in your BIOS if changing the Windows setting doesn’t prevent disk spindown.
  • In the CD/DVD Burning software, set the burn speed at or below the rated speed of the media to be used. Some people have had more success using 2X and 4X speeds on faster burners.  If you do not do this, your CD will most likely not function properly.
  • If you have a CD/DVD burner, your system may already have CD/DVD burning software.  If you have software, you should check with the documentation that comes with your software as well as the applicable instructions below.
  • If you are extracting to a hard disk, you should extract to a dedicated directory (not to the “root” of the hard disk). E.g. you should create a directory rather than using c:\ or d:\.  Note that you will loose the option to boot from the cd/dvd  (provided this was included in the ISO-image in the first place).
  • This document includes links to third party software utilities and documentation.  If you choose to download any software, you are responsible for the terms and conditions, and any costs that are required by the individual vendors.  The utilities are not listed in any particular order, and no utility is recommended over any other.  If a download location is not provided, the documentation applies to software you may already have, or can purchase from software supply stores.
